How to Craft a Community Manager Resume That Actually Gets Interviews
Here is the exact resume template and strategy I use, the same one that has helped people in my program double or even triple their interview callbacks.
If you’re applying to a ton of jobs right now and getting mostly silence, you're not alone. Right now, the market is wildly competitive. You’ve got hundreds of people going for the exact same community manager role, which means blending in with a standard, boring resume is the fastest way to get ignored.
To get interviews, you need to stand out through your positioning.
Here is the exact framework and resume strategy I use, the same one that has helped people in my program double or even triple their interview callbacks.

1. The Non-Negotiable Tech Rule: Export as PDF Standard
Before touching layout or design, get this right:
Always export your resume as a PDF Standard.
Never export it as a JPEG or PNG.
Why? Because applicant tracking systems (ATS) and AI tools can’t read text inside an image. A quick test is to see if you can manually copy and paste text off your PDF. If you can’t copy the text, the AI scanner can’t read it either, and your application goes straight into the void.
2. Ditch the 5-Page Resume (Hook Them on Page One)
If you're reading this thinking, "Oh no, my resume is five pages long," don't panic.
It’s completely fine to keep a "master resume" with every single thing you’ve ever done. But when you apply for a job, recruiters don't care about everything you've ever done—they only care about what’s relevant to this specific role.
- One page is ideal. You want to hook them immediately on page one.
- Design for user experience. The layout shouldn't overwhelm them with a wall of text. It should pop out the exact information you want them to see.
"Won't I stick out too much with a custom design?" Unless you’re applying to a super rigid, traditional corporate environment, sticking out is the point. Why try to blend in with hundreds of other applicants?
3. How to Structure the Layout for Maximum Impact
Key Skills Section
Place your key skills front and center, pulling terms directly from the job description. This makes life easy for human hiring managers skimming your page, while making it simple for AI scanners to pick up key terms.
Use Section Headers to Your Advantage
Instead of just writing "Experience," use your headers strategically. For example, if a job description asks for 5+ years of experience, label your header "5+ Years of Experience". That way, recruiters don't have to count up dates or guess your seniority, it's immediately clear.
Short Bullets with Metrics
Keep your experience bullet points concise and heavy on metrics. Metrics help hiring managers visualize what you actually achieved. If you don't have exact numbers, give an honest estimate (just be ready to explain your estimate in the interview).
The "Secret" Bottom Section: Your Unique Edge
At the bottom of page one, reserve a spot for something highly relevant and unique that isn't just a standard skill.
- Example 1: If you’re applying to a gaming studio and have 1,000+ hours logged in their game, put that down!
- Example 2: Someone in my program applied to a community for women navigating divorce. Having gone through that experience herself, putting that personal connection on her resume gave her a massive positioning edge over other candidates.
4. Tailor Every Single Application
Yes, tailoring your resume for every single job application takes extra effort. But sending 10 hyper-tailored resumes will get you far more interviews than blasting 100 generic ones.
When I applied to a gaming studio role looking for someone to manage social platforms (Discord, Instagram, TikTok, Steam, X) and revamp their social strategy, I bent my template specifically to that description:
- Highlighted specific platforms they asked for.
- Featured metric-heavy bullets around revamping social channels.
- Included my long-time personal gaming background on Steam/PC.
Pro-tip: You can use AI to speed this process up! Feed an AI tool your experience alongside the target job description and ask it to help draft tailored bullets. Just make sure you review and refine the output yourself.
